The Chief of Staff to Governor T. A. Orji of Abia State, Cosmos
Ndukwe, yesterday at the Enyimba Stadium received a dose of what his
principal had been receiving from residents of Aba when he was pelted
with sachet water and ceaselessly booed. It was at the same stadium
among other places that Governor Orji was un-controllably booed in 2012
during the lying-in-state of the former Igbo leader, Chulwuemeka
Odumegwu by Aba residents for non-performance.
Ndukwe had entered the stadium shortly before the commencement of the
CAF Champions league match between Enyimba International of Aba and
Real Bamako of Mali, and minutes later, he went round the capacity
filled stadium to acknowledge cheers from fans and per-haps see if there
had been any change in the level of popularity of the present
government in the city. Immediately he stood up from his seat and began
to move round the stadium, Enyimba fans made no haste in ceaselessly
booing and throwing (pure water) sachet at him, saying so many
unprintable things against officials of the state government. It took
the chief of staff courage for him to get back to his seat as not even
the heavy presence of security operatives could deter the fans from
booing and pelting him with sachet water.
When it appeared that the matter was over and Ndukwe was about to
leave the stadium few minutes to the end of the match that Enyimba lost
by 1-2, the fans began another round of booing and pelting of sachet
water. Some of the fans, who spoke to Daily Sun after the incident, said
they took the action to tell the world that Aba people were not happy
with the present government in the state for failure to provide
dividends of democracy to the people. They said the story could have
been different if there were stones at the stadium, warning that un-less
the government fixes Aba roads and provides other social amenities in
the city, they would not be happy with it.
