Bomb explosions targeted at a shop-ping mall and commercial area by
suspected Boko Haram bombers in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital left
many residents dead and others injured yesterday evening. Deafening
sound from the first blast had barely subsided around the city at about
6.05pm, when another blast reverberated about two minutes later in same
area.
The twin explosion, according to eyewitnesses, occurred near a
shopping complex at Ajilari Bintu Sugar, Gomari ward of Maiduguri. “Many
were killed,” a resident who lives near the scene said, adding that
many residents “are already fleeing the area.”
A police source said a car laden with explosive devices (IEDs) and
parked near the shopping complex went in flame as the blast wreaked
havoc. “Many people are trapped in the shop because they are usually
open till about 8pm. Unfortunately, it is week-end when many residents
go shopping. Some had just stopped there to buy items for their families
when the explosion occurred,” the source said. Sunday Sun gathered that
many residents fled the area after the blast.
“Women and children are among those killed,” a source who visited the
scene minutes after the explosion said. He added that men of the state
fire service and emergency services were drafted to the scene
immediately to evacuate the dead and injured. “The fire service men and
others are already evacuating corpses now. Some policemen are also near
the place,” he said further.
Pandemonium gripped residents of Maiduguri following the blast as
people scurried to their homes. The youth volunteers were also drafted
to many parts of the metropolis to conduct stop and search, leading to a
heavy traffic jam.
ONLY GOD WOULD SAVE US..........AMEN.
